Meet FRÉ Ambassador, CPT & Founder of Lift Like A Mother Alicia McKenzie

About me:  I was born in North Carolina and live in Virginia just outside Washington, D.C. I’m a health and wellness professional, a mother of four, a wife and a business owner.

    My your fitness journey

I discovered the health and wellness lifestyle in 2008. I used to do CrossFit before it was cool and before Reebok got involved. I competed in USA Weightlifting. Then, for a while, I owned a CrossFit gym. I sold it in 2016 and I’m now focused on introducing people to healthier lifestyles virtually.

    Lift Like A Mother

Lift Like A Mother (LLAM) Coaching was born out of my athletic career and that's where my following came from. It was a way to share my fitness and weightlifting with others, and people often want to know how I do it all with four kids.

Part of LLAM is Amplify, which focuses on giving back. I am working to make this part of my company 100% nonprofit. We are focused on doing good in the community and delivering a healthier lifestyle to underserved populations in North America. Around the holidays, we’ve been working to “adopt” families and fight food insecurity.

    Fitness tips

Motivation is fleeting. The number one thing is that it doesn't have to be a perfect situation to workout and you won't always be motivated, but you must learn to be consistent. Doing something simple 30 minutes a day 5-6 days a week, even if it's just throwing a kid in a stroller and going for a walk is great.

    Covid-19

The pandemic has been very difficult—interpersonal connection and communication is so important. The fact that everything is virtual now is exhausting. We are keeping the community feeling online, but it is hard. Right now, I can see a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to the vaccine. Since we are nine months into this thing, I feel like it can't get much worse. In March, when everything shut down and we were terrified to go out, things were much harder. Since then, we’ve learned so much about how to cope and adapt. I feel optimistic about the future.

My skin is combination: oily and dry, and it’s really hard to find products that work for all areas of my face.

    Skincare

My skin is combination: oily and dry, and it’s really hard to find products that work for all areas of my face. It has taken me years to find something that works. Right now, I have to be careful with the amount of cleansing I do or my skin dries out. After a workout, I usually wash with water. I only cleanse with a product once a day.

    My routine

When I wake up, I rinse my face with water, then I use  PROTECT ME  and sometimes a tinted moisturizer, like  GLOW ME.  If I workout in the morning, I like to keep it simple. I use 100% pure makeup. In the evening, I use  PURIFY ME  and some nights I’ll use  DETOX ME  followed by a proprietary eye serum from my dermatologist, and then  100% Organic Argan Oil.  My favorite FRÉ is  PROTECT ME;  it’s thick enough to moisturize the dry parts of my skin, but not oily.

    Rapid Fire:

      • Favorite exercise?  Lunges
      • What does sweat mean to you?  A release
      • What comes to mind when you think of FRÉ?  The beautiful blue packaging
      • What are you most excited about in life right now?  I'm just grateful that we are all healthy and my family wants for nothing.
      • What’s something you’d still love to learn?  I'm working on getting a nutrition certification.
      • If you were a hashtag, what would you be?  #babiesandweights
      • What is your mantra?  Progress over perfection!
      • What is an issue that you wish we spoke about more often?  Equality and recognizing talent. The oversexualization of BIPOC women is disheartening and I wish it was talked about more.
      • What does women’s empowerment mean in 2020?  We’re not going to be silenced or go unnoticed. We have a voice.
      • What are your dreams for the FRÉ community?  Post-pandemic, I would like to go and sweat and moisturize with a group of women; I would love the connection and the networking.
