Did you know Exercise can induce Skin Afflictions?

Exercise is good for your overall health. However, its benefits may come with some skin afflictions. For instance, some experts believe that cardio exercises and running cause more oxygen or free-radical damage. It can also damage collagen and elastin, which are the skin's supportive fibers. Also, as long as you know the potential skin problems that can come with exercise, you can take measures to avoid them.

Another potential problem is zits. However, this is not a problem caused by exercise itself but hygiene habits. Sweat is the culprit when it comes to many post-workout skin problems. Your goal should be vigilant because sweat provides the warm, moist environment that bacteria need to thrive. This is made worse by any dirt and makeup on the skin because it mixes with the sweat and clogs the pores. You should also wear absorbent workout gear to avoid the friction that tight, non-breathable clothing can cause. Such clothes cause what is known as acne mechanica. The friction sets off the sebaceous glands which produce excess oil that mixes with sweat and dead skin cells which clog the pores. This can be avoided by cleansing the face before working out and showering right after.

Exercise can also aggravate existing skin conditions like rosacea and miliaria or sweat rash which makes inflamed skin even worse. This happens because exercise makes blood rush to the surface of the skin. One simple solution is to splash cold water on your face before working out. You can also hold cold compresses to your face to keep it cool which will ensure existing skin problems don't get worse. There are also medical treatments that can ease chronic redness.

Skin infections are another potential problem to be wary of for those who work out in gyms where equipment is shared. The thing to do here is to take precautions like using anti-bacterial wipes to wipe off gym equipment before using it and covering open wounds including cuts. Also, wear sandals in the shower and use anti-bacterial soap or shower gel. Never walk around in your bare feet and carry your own towel to use at the gym to be on the safe side. You can never be too safe.

    Fit and radiant

Even in your home, it is not possible to be 100% germ-free. The same is true at the gym. You can only do your best to prevent skin problems related to sweat and bacteria. Then, you can work out to keep your body strong and healthy without worrying about it compromising the health and appearance of your skin.
