January is here and it’s time for New Year’s resolutions and positive changes. What is on your list of goals for 2021? Are you going to build a better monthly budget or try to keep your entryway closet consistently clean? What about improving the way you shop? Believe it or not, consumerism affects the environment.
Consumerism is characterized by the increasing consumption of goods. Unfortunately, as the demand for goods rises, so does the demand for water and natural resources. In addition, contamination booms as factories pollute their surroundings, including the air and water, and customers continue to overflow landfills with disposable products, packaging, low quality items and trends that are no longer in fashion.
Shopping is a necessary part of life. It provides you with the things you need and it provides others with jobs, such as producing goods and making sales. However, there are ways to shop that mitigate your carbon footprint, and the small changes you make as a consumer can have a big impact on the environment. Let’s take a look at things we can change.
Reduce packaging - In 2018, containers and packaging amounted to 82.2 million tons of municipal solid waste in the United States. In order to reduce the use of unnecessary packaging and plastic bags, bring reusable bags with you when you go shopping. Additionally, buy from companies that use minimal packaging and do not put boxes within boxes within boxes.
Buy recyclables - Buy products packaged in recycled materials or in materials that can be recycled. FRÉ is working hard to transition away from plastics. I AM LOVE, I AM JOY, 100% Organic Argan Oil and REFRESH ME are all bottled in glass bottles and shipped in 100% eco-friendly boxes.
Look for vegan products - Animal testing is a huge part of chemical, food, and cosmetics production around the world. Unfortunately, these practices are often cruel to the animals as well as harmful to the environment. Tons of food are required to feed the millions of animals used for research, thus connecting damaging agricultural processes, such as water waste and deforestation, to animal testing. Buy vegan products and know that you are not contributing to this type of environmental damage. FRÉ’s skincare line is 100% vegan and is endorsed by PETA as a cruelty free brand! FRÉ’s products do not contain animal ingredients or animal-derived ingredients. Additionally, FRÉ does not agree with animal testing, so all of the ingredients, ingredient suppliers, formulations, and finished products are not tested on animals.
Value high quality - The market is flooded with low quality products. They can be disposable razors or cheap electric teapots, but the tendency is that they end up in the landfill shortly after their purchase. When you buy high quality products, their life span is longer and you are less likely to replace them. FRÉ’s skincare line is based on the Argania Active Complex©, a patent pending formula that combines super-hydrating argan oil with the leaf water and stem cells of the argan tree. The formulas also include essential oils, such as lavender, ylang-ylang, hemp, and rose. FRÉ takes quality very seriously, so you’ll want to use every drop of the products.
