  • WHY YOU NEED TO WEAR MINERAL SUNSCREEN (NOT CHEMICAL!)

by Jude Kayton July 23, 2024

WHY YOU NEED TO WEAR MINERAL SUNSCREEN (NOT CHEMICAL!)

Did you know? Mineral is the safest sunscreen for skin!

Mineral sunscreen contains either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These are natural UV filters that sit on the skin and physically block the sun's rays from penetrating the skin. The FDA proposed an order on September 24, 2021 that would mean only Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are defined as GRASE “generally safe and effective”.

Chemical sunscreen may cause endocrine disruption

Chemical sunscreen uses chemical ingredients that the skin absorbs to create a chemical reaction to block UV rays. The top 6 chemical filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and avobenzone) are currently under review because the FDA is concerned that these chemicals can cause endocrine disruption, increased risk of breast cancer, and reproductive issues.

    Chemical sunscreen destroys coral reefs

Chemical sunscreens have also been shown to cause coral bleaching, disrupt the growth of coral, and harm marine organisms. This is such a big issue that Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Aruba, Key West in Florida, Bonaire, Palau, and certain ecotourism reserves in Mexico have banned sunscreens that damage coral reefs. In Maui, according to ordinance 5306, all chemical UV filters are banned.

Mineral is safe and gentle on skin

Chemical SPFs tend to have more ingredients than mineral SPFs in order for a chemical reaction to take place. These added ingredients pose a much higher risk of irritating skin, or even causing allergic reactions. Conversely, the FDA states that FRÉ’s primary SPF ingredient, Zinc Oxide, “has little to no risk of irritating skin.” This makes mineral sunscreen the best option for sensitive skin, acne-prone skin and children and babies. You can use mineral sunscreen from 6 months +.

Dermatologists recommend mineral SPF for acne-prone & sensitive skin.

Zinc Oxide is best for broad spectrum protection

All sunscreens protect skin from UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn. However, only broad spectrum sunscreens protect against UVA rays, which are the main cause of photoaging. Since, both UVA and UVB can cause skin cancer, choosing a broad spectrum sunscreen is essential. Of the two safe mineral filters available (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) zinc oxide is the only one that provides UVA protection.

“Mineral sunscreens have UVA protection which is not present in all chemical sunscreens. This is crucial because UVA rays are the main cause of photoaging and can cause skin cancer” - Dermatologist Ahuva Cices

Tinted mineral sunscreen has added benefits

Mineral-based tinted sunscreens have a color base. In addition to blocking UVA and UVB rays like other mineral sunscreens, these formulas also block visible light, including blue light emitted from screens and electronic devices. This makes tinted mineral sunscreen especially effective at preventing and improving hyperpigmentation and melasma.
