    Always Wear Sunscreen

    Always Wear Sunscreen

The No. 1 reason to wear sunscreen is to reduce the risk of skin cancer. In America, 1 in 5 people get diagnosed with skin cancer during their lifetime.

Sunscreen should be worn everyday on every part of the body that is exposed to UV rays, and should be reapplied every 2 hours, and after sweating, going in water, or towel drying, says FRÉ dermatologist Dr. Sam Ellis. In summertime, and in wintertime, it’s important to protect your skin, especially when you’re spending time outdoors.

"The No. 1 reason to wear sunscreen is to reduce the risk of skin cancer."

She recommends SPF30 as a baseline for daily use. What the SPF value indicates is how long you can stay out in the sun without getting burned. SPF30 means that you can stay out 30 times longer than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen.

Still, it is best practice to limit your time in direct sun exposure, especially in the peak hours of the day, and of course to apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and cover your skin up as much as possible.

It’s important to choose a broad spectrum sunscreen, one that filters out both UVA and UVB rays. UVA are known to penetrate the skin more deeply and cause collagen and elastin to break down. This is what leads to skin looking dry, wrinkled, and pigmented and causes dramatic aging of the skin over time. UVB are the rays that do immediate damage, causing skin to burn, and these are the rays known to cause skin cancer.

"It’s important to choose a broad spectrum sunscreen, one that filters out both UVA and UVB rays."

    Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreens

According to Dr. Ellis, chemical and mineral sunscreens work in similar ways. Mineral sunscreens contain filters like Zinc oxide that reflect UV radiation from the skin, and Chemical sunscreens contain filters like Avobenzone and Homosalate, that absorb UV rays and release the energy as heat. They can both be effective sunscreens, she says.

"FRÉ sunscreens use chemical filters. It’s important to note that “chemical” does not equal “harmful.” FRÉ products use only clean and non-toxic ingredients."

FRÉ sunscreens use chemical filters. It’s important to note that “chemical” does not equal “harmful.” Just the opposite - FRÉ products use only clean and non-toxic ingredients, in accordance with EWG standards, and as approved by the FDA.
