We talk a lot about the sun being harmful to your skin, but the sun also can be harmful to your hair. Long periods in the sun can hurt the outside layer of the hair strand, called the cuticle. Sun damaged hair can be brittle, dry, and discolored. UV rays also can cause hair to thin, be frizzy, and have split ends.
Some of your daily activities also increase the risk of sun damage to your hair. Styling your hair with hot flat irons or rollers, lightening your hair, and swimming in chlorinated pools damage your hair’s keratin, the protein in your hair. The damaged protein allows sunlight and heat to penetrate your hair more easily, resulting in more fragile strands of hair.
Thankfully, argan oil is the solution to protect and treat your hair for sun and everyday damage. Let’s look deeper into the wonders of argan oil for hair.
Argan oil’s composition
Argan oil is high in fatty acids, specifically linoleic acid, oleic acid, and palmitic acid. These acids moisturize hair and add a protective layer, strengthening and protecting it from breakage.
Argan oil is rich in antioxidants, which protect against free radical damage from the sun. For centuries, the people of Morocco have been using argan oil on their skin and hair. Modern research has observed that it is the antioxidants that prevent skin and hair from becoming dry and brittle.
Argan oil has an abundance of tocopherol, a form of Vitamin E. Studies have shown that Vitamin E promotes hair growth.
Argan oil’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are also good for the scalp. They can improve and prevent skin conditions that cause hair loss, like seborrheic dermatitis (scaly and red patches of skin, usually on the scalp).
How to use argan oil on your hair
Argan oil as a hair mask - Before bed, take your clean, dry hair and divide your hair into two sections. Use a dropper to apply a few drops of argan oil to your scalp. Massage your scalp for 1-3 minutes. Then, put a few more drops of argan oil in your hands and rub them together to warm the oil. Once your hands feel warm, gently apply the oil from the top to bottom of your hair. For long hair, you should use about 10 drops per side. Wrap your hair in a towel or wrap and sleep with the argan oil on your hair and scalp. In the morning, wash the argan oil off with your normal shampoo and follow up with a conditioner.
Argan oil in your shampoo - Wet your hair. Pour your usual amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand. Add two drops of argan oil to the shampoo. Then, rub your hands together to mix the oil into the shampoo. Wash your hair with the mixture. Rinse. Repeat every other day.
Argan oil as a leave-in conditioner - Wash your hair as usual. Towel-dry your hair so that it’s just damp. Put a few drops of argan oil in your hands and rub them together to warm the oil. Once your hands feel warm, apply the oil to your hair. Dry and style your hair as you normally do. Repeat twice a week.

Argan makes hair shine
Being active usually translates to lots of time outside in the sun, and unfortunately, the sun is harsh on hair. Typical activities like hot styling, lightening your hair and exposure to chlorine also can damage your hair. Making argan oil part of your hair care routine will prevent UV and everyday damage. The antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamin E in argan oil moisturize and strengthen hair, so it can shine.
